About The Harvard Crimson

Founded in 1873, The Harvard Crimson is the official student newspaper of Harvard University, and the oldest continuously published daily college newspaper in the United States. Competition Format

Preliminary round

Saturday, September 26, 2026

Description: The preliminary round is open to all registered teams worldwide

Format:

  • Online challenge (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blanks, and short question)
  • Duration: 
    • Lower Primary: 45 minute
    • Upper Primary: One hour 
  • Each team member will individually attempt a set of test questions 
  • Only the top two scores will be used to calculate the team’s total score
  • Students may complete the challenge with guidance from a teacher or parent for technical support (e.g., accessing the platform or submitting responses), but all answers should reflect the student’s own thinking.
Test Scope:

Lower Primary

Students will engage with early language skills appropriate for their level. This may include recognising letters and common words, understanding simple instructions, and responding to short texts or visual prompts. Some questions may involve matching, identifying correct words, or connecting sounds to letters in a natural and intuitive way. 

Upper Primary

Students will work with a broader range of reading and language skills. This may include understanding short passages, identifying key ideas, and interpreting meaning in context. They may also encounter spelling and vocabulary questions that involve recognising correct word forms and applying basic language patterns.

Description: The top 15 highest-scoring teams in each quiz category from the preliminary round will qualify for the global semi-final round.

Final

October 18, 2026

Description: The top 5 performing team from the semi-final round in each quiz category will advance to the global final round.

Fee waiver is available for individual low-income students. Please ask your school counselor or principal to send an email titled 'Fee Waiver Request' to waivers@algoed.co from their official school email with your email address and confirm you need a waiver.
